Tim Parr was Born in Hillbrow Johannesburg on 28th November 1957 .He discovered music in 1964 when he heard the Beatles. He got his 1st guitar at the age of 11 and found he had a natural feel for the instrument and a bond was formed that is stronger then ever. He started writing songs by the age of 15. He formed his 1st band in 1976 with South African blues legend Larry Amos. They made one record called Baxtop “Work it out ” that still gets played today on South African radio stations.Baxtop broke up in 1981 and Tim formed Ella Mental with Heather Mac in 1982 and went on to have a few hits guided by Roddy Quin with EMI eventually relocating to Ireland under the guidance of Rod Stewart’s manager Billy Gaff. Being white South Africans in 1986 made it very hard to do any real music due to the cultural boycott that was in place at that time .
After 7 years and not getting anywhere musically Tim returned to South Africa and decided to continue musically another direction. After meeting some young musicians in Capetown in 1991 a band was formed called Zap Dragons that immediately gained a fanatical following but record companies didn’t take notice and despite all the fans the band broke up without making a record. Some of these songs that Tim wrote became the foundation for Tim’s 1st solo release in 1994 called Tim Parr” Still Standing” that produced another two hits and became a cult classic among South African’s who were experiencing the birth of a new South Africa filled with promise of unity through diversity.
