Rusty Red is a fiery-haired guitar-slinging singer/songwriter from Durban, South Africa who very seldom writes about himself in the third person. The son of a preacher man, a preacher woman and the brother of yet another preacher man, Rusty skipped the religious gene and instead found himself searching for meaning through the vibrations of six rusty strings. His musical influences range from John Mayer’s sweet and subtle marriage of blues guitar and introspective lyricism, Slow Hand Eric Clapton and BB King’s musical restraint, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s lack of restraint, all the way to the occasional with one might only find in a Queen song.
Well known in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands for his appearances with Pietermaritzburg legends The Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters who were among his musical mentors as well as Durban based powerhouse band The Black Lapels, Rusty has slowly but surely been making a name for himself as a solo artist – the kind very difficult to ignore.
During lock-down, Rusty decided to use his time at home to dive into new musical endeavors he had been putting off for years. First by putting on a series of live streams with the intention of giving people a place of refuge from the dizzying storm of Facebook news feeds, if only for an hour a week, the idea of which then led to the recording and production of a series of upcoming singles.
Rusty’s first two singles “Float” and “Infinity”, the former a song about disconnecting from the addictive cycle of engaging in unproductive arguments on social media, and the latter a song about a relationship that has to end where neither party wants it to, are both available on all major streaming platforms.
