"Sax, Soul, and Stories told through Music."

Rooted in Jazz, Grown from Experience
Born in Sebokeng in the Vaal Triangle and raised in Pretoria, Lefa Mosea’s musical journey began with guitar lessons in high school and quickly expanded into a deep love for music theory and performance. His path took a defining turn when he joined the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation at Pretoria’s State Theatre, where he was introduced to the saxophone—an instrument he had long admired. This was the beginning of a lifelong passion that would carry him from local stages to national acclaim.
In 2008, Lefa pursued formal studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, majoring in jazz (B.Mus Ed). It was here that he co-founded the band Take Note, which would become a national name after signing with Native Rhythms in 2011. As a key composer and arranger, Lefa’s musical influence gave the band a unique edge, contributing standout tracks like Ramasedi and uThando Lwam. Their performances included major festivals such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, where they shared stages with jazz greats like Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masekela, and Sibongile Khumalo.
A Solo Path and Sonic Vision
In 2015, Lefa launched his solo career, forming Lefa Mosea & The Double Standards Quintet. His solo work built on the success of Take Note, blending Afro-soul, smooth jazz, and traditional African elements into a uniquely South African sound. His debut single Mabele (2017) and album Double Standards (2020) received nationwide radio play and cemented his place as a creative force in the country’s jazz scene.
Lefa’s performances now range from intimate solo saxophone sets with backing tracks, to full-band productions and refined duo acts with a pianist. He has toured Southern Africa extensively—playing in Lesotho, Swaziland, and Botswana—and continues to be a sought-after live performer and collaborator.
Influence, Recognition, and Legacy
Influenced by legends like Hugh Masekela, Kirk Whalum, and Kenny G, Lefa’s compositions draw from both jazz and the soul of African music. His collaborations with Mobi Dixon, Msaki, and Wave Rhyder highlight his versatility and wide appeal. Recognized with multiple Mzansi Jazz Award nominations and accolades from the Department of Arts and Culture, Lefa continues to shape the future of South African jazz—one soulful note at a time.
