The Place of the Rising Sun

Mpumalanga, whose name beautifully translates to “The Place of the Rising Sun,” is a breathtaking province in the northeast of South Africa. Formed in 1994 from the eastern part of the old Transvaal, its landscape is one of dramatic contrasts, descending from the cool, grassy plains of the Highveld down the rugged escarpment to the hot, subtropical Lowveld. This stunning geographical diversity makes it one of the country's most scenic and popular tourist destinations, renowned for its incredible wildlife, spectacular vistas, and opportunities for adventure.

Home to Kruger and a Legendary Canyon

The province is home to some of Africa's most iconic natural wonders. It contains the southern half of the world-famous Kruger National Park, a vast wilderness that offers unrivalled opportunities to see the Big Five and a huge diversity of other animals and birds. Mpumalanga is also the location of the spectacular Panorama Route, a scenic drive that winds along the edge of the escarpment. This route provides access to legendary viewpoints like God's Window, the Three Rondavels, and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest and greenest canyons on Earth.

Ancient Rocks and Highveld Charm

Mpumalanga’s history is written in its ancient landscapes. It is home to the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the oldest exposed rocks on the planet. Its human history is equally profound, highlighted by the discovery of the Lydenburg Heads, some of the oldest Iron Age artworks ever found in southern Africa. The province's towns each offer a unique character, from the capital Mbombela to the industrial hub of eMalahleni, while charming spots like Dullstroom and Pilgrim's Rest add to the region’s diverse appeal.
